Heartquakes
A demonstration in Milan for the environment. The mountains of Val di Mello. People in the streets. The loneliness of the lakes. The cries for help. The silence among the peaks. The cry of so many voices reaches up here. The drums shake the trees like earthquakes. In the hope of being heard.
“May the silence of Nature be broken only by those who fight in Her name. May the baleful screams, like drums, shatter the wall of ignorance of those who still ignore the Earth… Still ignore the Life”
Filmed during Milan Pre-COP 26, a ministerial meeting anticipating the Twenty-sixth United Nations Climate Change Conference. Amidst bells, choirs, and various bacchanalia, we jumped into a streetcar streetcar of roadblocks, nonviolent actions, chanting at the top of our lungs, and hand-held filming in bicycle rides that crisscrossed Milan. There was a continuous party atmosphere for about ten days. I found myself for the first time warmly surrounded by law enforcement. I listened with a smile to the swearing and cursing of sciure and hurried workers at the CityLife intersection, “Go to work! Idiot!” I ate great food around people from all over. I saw hordes of green-colored young people marinating in the school. I saw guitar playing hanging from a traffic light. I saw, above all, union and cohesion of souls giving voice to those silent trees. To a nature that in a million ways is trying to communicate with us for help. Then I imagined a chorus, far away, gradually picking up rhythm, among the trees of the valleys to the north.
Shooted with Edoardo Giberti.
